28, 29 & 31 January - several interpreters and teachers partcipated in a series of workshops conducted by Mr Doug Bowen-Bailey, of the US, presented in Perth, WA. Topics included discourse management; mentoring; and working in education settings.

1 March 2016 - Karen Bontempo presented professional learning to mainstream teachers in primary and secondary schools attending in-servicing at Sensory re: sign language development in deaf children
13 March 2016 - Karen Bontempo presented at the Auslan Professionals Network on the Auslan as a LOTE program at Shenton College
May 2016 - Most SCDEC staff completed a number of online Dept of Education modules on various dates, including: Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation; Child Protection and Abuse Prevention; Recordkeeping Awareness Training; and Students Online Policy Course
24 May & 21 June 2016 - Karen Bontempo attended workshops at North Metropolitan TAFE on the TAELLN411 upgrade (Language, Literacy and Numeracy) for VET delivery. Completion of related assessment tasks for unit completion in own time

28 June 2014 - Many SCDEC staff attended the ASLIA WA Interpreter of the Year Awards evening in Nedlands, with SCDEC winning organisation of the year, and several staff nominated for, and winning, major awards

Prof Monikowski presented in Perth on discourse analysis and language myths for Deaf students. 4 June 2013 - School development day for SCDEC staff onsite at Shenton College. Full day workshop presentated by senior school psychologist, Tracey Graham, re: the Golden personality test and teamwork.

16-19 Oct 2013 - Attendance at the World Federation of the Deaf Conference, Deaf Film Festival and the ASLIA National Conference held in Sydney, Australia. Attended in full or part by: Josie Hodgetts, Roseanne Bailey, Karen Bontempo and Alana Wiekart.
22 Oct 2013 - SDERA: Alcohol/Cannabis Drug Education- attended by Daniela Trimboli and Sandra Strandsjo.
A series of 12 workshops held throughout the year were attended by Sally Langdon re: the "Teach me grammar" course targeted at users of English as a Second Language. Facilitated by Geoff Pearson, the creator of the Grammar Disc.
You can review the background and qualifications of our staff at the staff web page. It is not noted in any detail in the professional development events described above, but many of our staff are participating in undergraduate, and postgraduate studies at university, as well as undertaking TAFE courses this year. All SCDEC staff are to be commended for their high level of personal accountability and their clear commitment to life-long learning.
