Shenton College

SCDEC is proud to be in a unique partnership arrangement with Shenton College. As co-located schools, the Deaf Education Centre is supported by Shenton College to achieve our mission and our mutual goals of excellence for our respective and shared students.

The Deaf Education Centre has developed a collaborative and productive relationship with Shenton College and this ensures the students have access to mainstream classes in a leading state school, with a reputation for achieving excellent results.

One of the major ‘value adding’ programs SCDEC brings to Shenton College is the incredibly successful and very popular Auslan program, which was introduced at the school in 2014, and sits alongside the other language options available for study by Shenton College students. Approximately 250 mainstream hearing students from Years 7-12 are enrolled in the Auslan course annually, with magnificent results to date. This has included achievement of Certificate III in Auslan and Certificate IV in Auslan qualifications by students in Years 10 and 11, and Auslan being studied as an ATAR subject in Years 11 and 12. A key outcome over the past 10 years, however, has been the significantly increased inclusion of deaf students in all aspects of the school community and across the campus, with Auslan so fundamentally embedded within the school, and embraced by students and staff alike.
