Enrolment

Thank you for taking the time to view our website.

Shenton College Deaf Education Centre is not a stand alone building. We share our physical school site with Shenton College.

In doing so, we are able to offer the significant positive benefits of being a co-located school – a truly inclusive program for Deaf and hard of hearing students that focuses on the growth and development of the whole child. By sharing the physical site, we are able to offer a wider variety of curriculum, facilities, support services and out of school activities giving each student exceptional opportunities to realise their educational potential.

The staff of Shenton College Deaf Education Centre and Shenton College all strive to provide programs and support that reflect the diverse needs of the individual student. All modes of communication are accepted, with resources being provided to assist where needed. The students have access to a wonderful environment of support, with a cohort of other students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Shenton College Deaf Education Centre welcomes enrolment applications from Deaf and Hard of Hearing children who meet the requisite criteria specified by the Department of Education.

We are currently accepting enrolments for entry in 2024, across every year level.

Shenton College Deaf Education Centre is committed to individual pathways for Deaf and hard of hearing students to achieve their full potential in a mainstream learning environment. For some students’ success will be working towards apprenticeships and employment while for others it will be successfully continuing their studies at TAFE or at university.

In accordance with the Department of Education Enrolment Policy, Shenton College Deaf Education Centre has the following processes to consider enrolment applications and implement enrolment decisions:

To determine eligibility for enrolment at the school, interested families must provide the school with

  • a current audiogram or Cochlear Implant Clinic report less than 12 months old,
  • most recent school report and Inclusive Education Plan,
  • any additional medical and therapy reports.

Before enrolment into the school, the parent/family must visit the school with their child, to meet with the principal. During this meeting, the eligibility of the child will be determined.

The principal may:

  • prioritises applications and offer places according to the level of hearing loss, communication needs and additional needs information.
  • applies proximity of a student’s usual place of residence to the school where the number of prioritised applications exceeds the places available;
  • decline to enrol eligible students if the specialist learning program is unable to meet the current learning needs of the student.

The Shenton College Deaf Education Centre enrolment criteria for students with a hearing loss includes:

  • diagnosed hearing loss that is typically bilateral and severe or profound and is their primary diagnosis.
  • the capacity to participate in a mainstream (classroom) environment for their year level with reasonable and appropriate adjustments including communication and academic support.
  • social, emotional and/or behavioural challenges that are directly attributable to the impact of hearing loss.
  • self-management of personal care requirements.
  • Qualifies for, or accesses regular Teacher of the Deaf Support from SSEN:
