Role of a Teacher of the Deaf
The Teacher of the Deaf at Shenton College Deaf Centre, is responsible for a designated group of students.
They provide:
- academic support on an individual or small group basis (within or withdrawn from the classroom)
- guidance, information and resources to the mainstream subject teacher to empower the teacher in catering for the distinctive audiological, linguistic and emotional needs of students within the classroom setting
- collaborate with each subject teacher regarding special provisions/accommodations and the construction of specific educational activities or programs to enhance the learning of case managed students within the classroom setting
- construct IEPs in collaboration with each subject teacher and parents of assigned students –
- conduct pre and post-intervention assessments
- use pre-assessment to set intervention goals and guide intervention strategies
- use post-assessment tools to gauge progress and report to parents and classroom teachers and make recommendations
- implement appropriate direct instruction programs for small groups of students
- participate in weekly staff meetings and report on the status of assigned students
- liaise with external agencies to co-ordinate education support efforts within and outside the school
- implement appropriate social/emotional programs or guidance for individuals or small groups of students
- as necessary and frequently communicate with parents to address issues as they arise
- seek and participate in professional development relevant to the position.
